Do you know how you can, in various ways, increase your firewood business's winning potential and the added value of the products you offer?
When you sell high-quality firewood, you can usually charge a higher price for it. On the other hand, making firewood bags from waste and various types of wood requires less work, but the profit you receive from them is also smaller. It is therefore important to carefully consider what types of firewood you produce and what price you can charge for them in the market.
Understand your customers, optimize your production
Right at the beginning, it is worth pausing to consider, among other things, the following questions: For what purpose exactly do your customers buy firewood? What do your customers use the firewood for, and what size firewood do they actually need? Could it be possible to find new potential customers in your area of operation, or perhaps completely new customer segments? And do their needs correspond to those of your current customers?
Also consider how often your customers need to replenish their inventories? And how do they expect deliveries to be made?
Based on these questions, you can start building your company’s business plan. Based on it, you can start growing your business and aiming for better profitability. Knowing the needs and desires of your customers is important, as this way you can serve them in the best possible way and plan your production accordingly.
Once you have familiarized yourself with the markets and the needs of your customers, you must next ensure that you reliably obtain the raw material for your firewood. In addition, you must procure a folding machine that meets the requirements set for your customers' production.
Find a reliable timber supplier
In order for your firewood business to be able to serve its customers reliably, you must be able to be sure that you always have enough raw material for making firewood. If the logs do not come from your own forest, it is advisable to use more suppliers. This way, the supply difficulties of one supplier will not have a decisive impact on the operation of your company.
Several suppliers also allow you to order different types of wood when your customers’ orders are variable. This also allows you to expand your customer base.
Try to find suppliers who deliver timber of the highest quality and size possible. In this way, you can purchase one single planer that operates effectively for the size of logs you are using. A good material for producing planer logs is wood that is of a sufficient diameter, but is not suitable for sawing.
The larger the size of the bellows you use, the more flaps you can produce in the same time. For example, a bellows with a diameter of 10 cm produces 2.6 liters of air while a bellows with a diameter of 20 cm produces 10.3 liters in the same time. Therefore, with a doubling of the diameter, the production in this case almost doubles.
The smallest rings should be made as ignition cores or pre-packed firewood with a clapper machine that has a fast cutting cycle and simultaneous cutting and splitting movements. When you chop small rings into firewood instead of making a bundle from them, you usually get larger profits. On the other hand, if you use larger cutters with a larger diameter, they require more cutting power from your clapper machine. This should of course be taken into account when purchasing a clapper machine as well.
If you are unable to use bars of the same diameter, you should purchase a large enough clapper machine that allows you to choose the diameter based on the diameter of the bar. Bars of different diameters should be sorted so that you do not have to constantly change the diameter of the bar, but can produce firewood as efficiently as possible. Randomly oversized wedges can be easily cut with a splitting machine.
If your company is large enough, and the diameter of the dies you use varies significantly, you should also consider purchasing several punch machines. This way, you can work as efficiently as possible.
Efficient processes increase the profitability of your firewood business
When choosing a folding umbrella, it is also worth paying attention to to an efficient wood chipper and a good log table, which allow you to improve the handling of firewood and increase the use of your chainsaw safety and ergonomics. With the right tools, you can also reduce the need for manpower. When one person uses the clapper machine, another can take care of loading the logs, moving the finished firewood, and receiving orders.
It is usually more efficient to design a functioning process for moving the logs to the log splitter than to transport the machine to different locations. Install your log splitter on a concrete slab or similar to make it easier to collect sawdust and separate the waste. It is also sensible to, wherever possible, place the log splitter indoors or under a roof to make it possible to work even in bad weather and during the winter.
Make sure you have an effective process for storing firewood as well. It is important to ensure that finished firewood never lies on the ground – this way it won’t get wet unnecessarily and dry out faster. If necessary, during peak times it is worth hiring part-time workers to help pack firewood, stack it, and perform other similar tasks.
Additional tip!
The right tools and equipment are extremely important if you want to grow your business. For example, a small crane mounted on a truck can be useful if you use your boom lift in several different locations. Also, remember to price your work correctly if you are doing work on multiple locations – trips take valuable time away from efficient production.
