The energy crisis and the sharp rise in energy prices have made the firewood market more active than in years. This extraordinary demand for firewood is now being seen not only in Finland but also around the world. Many firewood sellers are currently having to sell out of stock. Delivery times for firewood saws are also exceptionally long.

Currently, the front page of many online stores selling firewood contains a common message: new orders cannot be accepted. The product page reveals that all products are sold out.

”The firewood trade is booming right now. The rise in electricity prices and possible future power outages have caused households to fill their firewood stores at an unprecedented pace. Many firewood sellers have already sold out their stocks before the frosts arrive.”, says Veijo Kontro, Hakki Pilke, sales manager for Klapikoneiden in Finland.

Many firewood dealers' inventories from this season have already been sold. Therefore, many have had to suspend their sales entirely for now in order to focus on making more firewood available for sale.

Hakki Pilke Pro 38 machine owned by a well-known merchant who produces firewood Simo Rousu produces approximately 1,000 m3 of firewood annually, and at its best, 11 full-trailer loads. This year, Rousu sold out its own share of firewood as early as August.. The exceptional nature of the situation is shown by the fact that, for example, last year in Roussala there was enough wood to be sold until December.

In addition, customers are currently willing to travel a long way to get their firewood, as long as they just get the wood.

Some larger entrepreneurs still have enough firewood to sell. For example, Hakki Pilke is making firewood with the 50 Pro machine. The garden of Metsalo and with trees The firewood from the warehouse isn't completely finished yet. The order backlog is still huge for them as well, so the situation could change soon.

Demand drives the price of firewood

The strong demand that has persisted for a longer period of time has driven the prices of firewood in both Finland and the rest of the world. In Finland, the price of a 1 m3 cubic meter of firewood currently hovers at over one hundred euros. In some regions, the price with delivery to the home may already be 150 euros.

”The availability of raw material and the price increase are now worrying many clippers. This threatens to increase the already long delivery times. The rising energy costs also raise the price of clippers that are dried mechanically, because the dryers also use electricity for heat transfer,” says Veijo Kontro.

For a long time, the best way to ensure firewood for the winter has been to order firewood well in advance in spring. This year, firewood dealers have noticed that demand has spread out over a longer period than usual, and orders are starting to come in earlier than usual.

Ordering firewood already in spring remains the best way to ensure you have your own firewood for the next autumn and winter. This will also likely get you a slightly cheaper price for the firewood – especially when demand is on the rise.

Along with the demand for firewood, the demand for clapper machines has also naturally risen. Currently, the delivery times for almost all manufacturers of clapper machines are one year away.

“Demand for clippers has been stronger in export countries over the past year than ever before. This is mainly due to the sharp increase in energy prices. Due to the increased demand, delivery times have multiplied from the so-called normal level worldwide,” says Hakki Pilke, Export Manager for clippers. Jari Niskakoski.

If you feel that your clapper machine needs an update for the 2024 season, we recommend placing an order as soon as possible. Currently, the growth in demand for both firewood and clapper machines continues, which may further prolong delivery times.
