Tuoreen tai muuten kostean puun polttaminen ei ole energiatehokasta, joten se käy kukkarolle. Lisäksi kostean puun polttaminen aiheuttaa merkittävästi enemmän päästöjä kuin oikein kuivatun puun poltto. Kosteaa puuta polttaessa energiaa kuluu veden haihduttamiseen, mikä on suoraan pois polttopuun tuottamasta lämmöstä.
